Abstract : What is the world without borders, as we know them? When we look at a fence or a wall, what do they tell us? A fence cannot speak, but it sends a message and changes the behavior of the one who crosses it. Fences, walls and lines exist all over the world, in many cultures they are even a universal symbol of protection.
Since ancient times, the concept of protection always existed along with the notion of the 'amulet’. The main function of fences is to protect, just as an amulet protects the wearer. In this project, several amulets as brooches, pendants and bracelets are developed, based on and associated with the fences I have been studying and photographing via Google Maps.
Inspired by the ubiquitous endless lines of small green fences that stretch all over Russia, the artistic research delves into the strong visual language of the particular fences and its political and urbanistic meaning. Fences are made of hollow square metal tubes and represent a huge variety of simple constructivist shapes. The visual part of my research is devoted to finding different variations of these shapes. The jewelry collection as final result of this project is based on the visual language of the original fences
Jewelry has three stages of interaction with others. I, as the creator, upload meaning and history into the objects, the wearer of my jewelry receives a protective function as a hidden amulet and carries history by broadcasting through these objects, and finally, the audience interact with the jewelry as with a conundrum, which is not only interesting to solve, but exciting to find out what is hidden inside
The physical and metaphysical aspects of the jewelry pieces are mixed and understood as a reflection of the environment in which they are found. Through the bending of hollow square wire, I illustrate the political and urbanistic problems of Russia are illustrated. Just as the state puts people within certain limits, objects work with the resistance of metal and especially emphasize with the traces of bending. The metaphysical notion of amulets and protection lies in the deception of the eye when first looking at objects, one cannot immediately find the right point of view. At the intersection of all details and meanings this work exists
Key Words: Fence, Protection, Amulets, Bending, Russian urbanistic, Politics, Private and public.
