EcoRead. Designing a Perso-Arabic typeface for small sizes

Abstract :
This study addresses the persistent challenge of Arabic typography, specifically the lack of specialized typefaces for small text. The legibility of Arabic characters in books typically ranges from 12-14-point sizes, while in newspapers it is even smaller, ranging from 10-12-point sizes. The use of small font sizes can significantly impact the economics of publishing, particularly in recent years characterized by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has resulted in a substantial increase in book publishing and production costs.

The purpose of this study was to design a Perso-Arabic typeface optimized for 4-7-point sizes. The study aimed to answer the question of which design parameters influence the improvement and enhancement of Arabic character legibility at small sizes. To achieve this, a meticulously employed a combination of qualitative, descriptive-analytical, and data collection method. The results of the study demonstrate that ten design parameters, namely Rhythm, Weight, Width, Negative character space, X-height, Eyes and Loop counter, Kashida, Allographic letter shapes, Dots, and Spacing, have a significant impact. By considering and utilizing these parameters, it becomes possible to design letters with optimal legibility for a Perso-Arabic typeface at small sizes.
