De reconstructie van een Acrophyseter deinodon. Hoe komt een moderne reconstructie illustratie tot stand?

Het maken van reconstructie illustraties behoort tot één van de taken van de non-fictie illustrator. Dit kan gaan om het reconstrueren van landschappen, een uitgestorven dier- of plantensoorten, reconstructies van oude culturen,….
Maar op welke manier komt zo’n reconstructie tot stand? Kan je, als illustrator, een goede samenwerking opbouwen met experts van archeologie en paleontologie? En hoe verloopt zo een project? In samenwerking met Olivier Lambert van het departement paleontologie van het natuurhistorisch museum te Brussel werd een reconstructie op poten gezet van een Acrophyseter deinodon, een uitgestorven walvissoort van 5,500 miljoen jaar oud.
Na een lang proces van illustraties en onderzoek heb ik geprobeerd deze oude walvissoort terug tot leven te brengen.
Making reconstructionial illustrations is one of the tasks of the non-fiction illustrator. This involves making reconstructions of landscapes, extinct animal- and plant species, reconstructions of ancient cultures…
But in which way is a reconstructional illustration made? Is it possible, as an illustrator, to collaborate successfully with experts as archaeologists and palaeontologists? And in which way does such a project evolve? In cooperation with Olivier Lambert from the department of palaeontology of the royal museum of natural history of Brussels, a reconstruction of an Acrophyseter deinodon was put on its feet. This was an ancient whale of 5,500 million years old. Through a long process, I tried to bring this ancient whale back to life. |
