Floating steps

Abstract :
This project is based on an experience that made me feel fear, a kind of fear I've never experienced before, was something unknown to me, it was beyond my understanding, it was inside of me waiting to come out to torment me, it was hidden in my unconscious.

Through this fear I realized that humans create barriers to protect themselves, which can be used as a survival mechanism for what happens outside, having control of what is externalized, as well as what is internalized. We as living beings on the outside want to demonstrate and think that we have control of our interior and of our emotions but in reality, our emotions will always be creating tensions and being what make us be who we are: rational, emotional and yet vulnerable people.

I wanted to work with fear as a universal concept, taking referent the unknown fear of our interior. Represent a very personal feeling and make it universal. To do this I build the pieces with wax sheets and then melting into glass, since it is my understanding of how fear is generated within our minds: by past experiences accumulated in our memory.
With this process I make this fear conscious and I make it somewhat known to me, where I can identify it, accept it as it is and understand it as something occasional.

Throughout the project the use of opposites is an inspiring tool for creating shapes and making decisions about materials and colors. The interior and exterior are very important for the concepts of containment and content.
The pieces have two parts that are made of glass, but each one has its own character, which identifies it as a separate entity. The interior represents the contained fear. And the exterior barriers I try to put up to control these unknown fears.

The idea of each piece is to show how fear is inside us. Where, we can only discover it with an action or decision that we make. In this case, the decision is: take off the piece and put it against the light to be able to identify the fear hidden inside or the other option is to turn the piece to see its interior and face the fear and reveal it as it is. These actions convey purpose of these pieces, to seek the unknown.

These pieces are a reminder that we are vulnerable humans, where we constantly strive to be super heroes that we will never be. Yet we always want to live and fight for our lives and while we have that positive energy to live fully, we will not allow time to be wasted with disenchantment, and let sadness and fear get the best from us. So we will always be winning over death.

Floating Steps has the intention to carries a positive message and generate a spark within us so that we question ourselves and explore in our unconscious what our true fears are. Also, to get to know us better, starting with the negative aspects in order to make all the positive things inside ourselves flourish.
