Sports in the English classroom

2015
Coels, Dimitri
Professionele bachelor in het onderwijs: secundair onderwijs

Abstract :
NL:

ENG:
May 3 2015; Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois win the Premier League with Chelsea FC. The English league is broadcast worldwide and followed by 4.7 billion people. Many Belgians are among these 4.7 billion. The interest in the league has undoubtedly risen through the involvement of Belgian players such as Hazard and Courtois.

The Anglo-Saxon sports are represented strongly worldwide. Not only the English Premier League, but also other British sports such as tennis and cricket move millions. The Americans don’t sit still either. The NBA, the American basketball league, draws more and more attention in Europe, and the viewership numbers of the Super Bowl, the grand finale of the American Football season, are also steadily on the rise.

Why is the subject of sports not included in EFL lessons more often? After the (almost obligatory) introduction to sports via sports vocabulary, there is hardly any focus on this culturally relevant theme. In this thesis, I research the interest of pupils in sports and I explore the possibilities to involve this subject more often in the English classroom.

If the interest is there, the teaching resources have to be present as well.
